‘Feel good habits’ to change your life for the happier

Positive habits can be life-changing. Not only to your physical health but to your mental health, relationships, productivity, life path...well, the list is endless.

“Oh, that’s a nasty habit.”

“I need to kick this habit.”

“He’s such a creature of habit, he never leaves his comfort zone.”

The word ‘habit’ gets a pretty bad rap, don’t you think?

Habits are usually seen as something you need to ditch, rather than having a positive enhancement to your life.

But positive habits can be life-changing. Not only to your physical health, but to your mental health, relationships, productivity, life path...well, the list is endless.

We’ve pulled together a list of ‘feel good habits’ that quite simply, you need in your life right away.

10 minutes of daily meditation

If you’re feeling stressed or worn down by the daily grind, meditation is a great way to re-centre and get your thoughts in order.

And before you think you have to commit to a full hour of ohm-ing, as little as 10 minutes per day can have powerful benefits, such as:

  • Reducing stress
  • Relieving anxiety
  • Curing insomnia issues
  • Decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease

The practice of meditation gives you some much-needed down time to rest physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it’s completely free, which is an added bonus.

If you haven’t already heard of it, there’s a handy little app called Headspace, that simply breaks down meditation for beginners.

Call on the move

Forming healthy relationships play a crucial role in our happiness. A positive relationship can be shared between any two people who love, support, encourage and help each other in a practical sense, as well as emotional.

The tricky part is finding time to do all of that nurturing in the super busy lives we lead. An easy way to do this, is to get into the habit of calling a friend while you’re on the move.

Do you usually listen to podcasts? Take 10 minutes out and call your best friend.

Do you normally listen to the radio? Tune in later and give an old school pal a ring.

Listen carefully

Leading on nicely from this, a key skill in effective communication is listening. You will be far more successful in cultivating both personal and professional relationships if you pay attention to what others have to say.

Listening to someone makes that person feel valued. But it could also help you to gain a fresh perspective.

And listening isn’t only hearing what’s being said. Being interested and emotionally in tune will create a stronger connection.

Here’s a helpful guide on how to be a good listener if you need some specific tips.

Read every day

The habit of reading is one of the most powerful habits you can introduce to your daily life. Not only does relaxing with a book give you sanctuary from a busy day, but it can help refresh a tired mind.

  • Regular reading has a wealth of benefits, like:
  • Boosts your confidence as your knowledge builds
  • Reduces stress by transporting you to other realms
  • Expands your vocabulary
  • Improves memory as you follow a story or retain facts
  • Increases focus and attention span

The good news is, there’s a reading genre for every person on the planet. Classical novels, self-help books, street poetry, fashion mags or religious texts, there will be something there to pique your curiosity.

Practice appreciation

As human beings, we can get too caught up in life to sit back and be grateful. French novelist, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr said, “we can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.”

When you practice being grateful, you can reduce stress, create positivity and improve your physical health. An easy way to get started is to start a daily gratitude journal. Before you go to bed, reflect on the day and take the time to remind yourself of at least one thing you appreciate.

The more you learn to appreciate the small joys in life without letting them get overshadowed by petty worries, the happier you’ll be.

Take a daily wellness dose

Getting the nourishment you need is essential for a healthy and happy lifestyle. If you don’t get the right nutrition, you’ll feel sluggish, look tired and start to see a whole host of health problems cropping up.

The problem is, with super busy lifestyles, it’s not always easy to remember to eat well. And even if you do, supermarket fruit and veg often lack the nutrition we need.

By taking a well-rounded vitamin and mineral supplement you’ll soon notice more energy, focus and physical wellness.

Are you the forgetful type? Set a reminder - that’s what smartphones are for, as we always say.

Love, Vitami
