Glowing, healthy-looking skin. It’s what everyone wants, but thinks it takes a whole lot of effort to get.
Our skin is our protector. It shields us from damaging microbes and the elements, helps to regulate body temperature and gives us sensation and touch.
It’s the biggest organ and is incredibly hard-working.
While it deserves a bit of TLC, the belief that you have to adopt an overly zealous skincare routine simply isn’t true.
In fact, there are only 5 important steps you need to take for visibly healthy skin.
1. Get your 8 hours
It sounds obvious, but so many people are sleep-deprived when all their skin needs is a decent recharge.
While you’re having a snooze, your skin’s repair mechanisms kick into action. So when your body is deprived of much-needed sleep, it releases more adrenaline and cortisol, which can trigger breakouts.
Unfortunately, it can also lead to dehydration in the skin. While you're sleeping, the body's hydration rebalances and your skin is able to recover moisture. This leads to puffy bags under your eyes and under-eye circles, as well as dryness and more visible wrinkles.
Here’s a handy article from Mental Health on how to get more shut-eye, if you need some more tips.
2. Reduce stress
Our body’s response to stress is surprising. Most people think it only impacts the brain, but in fact, it can affect our whole body.
Inflammation is one of the body’s most prominent reactions to stress. The stress response triggers our immune system to get ready for battle, no matter what the cause of the stress is. In turn, this releases chemicals such as interleukins, which cause inflammation in order to protect your health.
3. A glass of water in the morning
Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning helps your body to release toxins, eliminating them from the blood. This is good news for your skin as the removal of toxins keeps it glowing, healthy, and radiant.
Dehydration is also one of your skin’s worst enemies, as it’s the main cause of wrinkles in your skin, dark patches, and deep pores.
Kick off your day properly and keep your body hydrated (you could even do a two-in-one with a vitamin supplement that mixes with water, ahem).
4. Cleanse, tone, moisturise
If your skincare routine involves a face wipe and a quick moisturise, you’re missing a trick. “Cleanse, tone and moisturise” is an often said mantra for a good reason.
The three-step system was developed to take care of our most basic skincare needs. Here’s how:
- You’ll need a cleanser to wash off the dirt, makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells, and environmental impurities that end up on your face naturally throughout the day.
- A toner is essential for balancing out the skin’s pH levels, restoring an acidic state so the skin is purified and able to absorb moisture more efficiently. It can also minimise the appearance of pesky pores.
- A moisturiser speaks for itself. A great moisturiser helps keep your skin youthful, fights skin problems and stops blemishes in their tracks.
5. Top-up your nutrients
Even if you eat a balanced diet, the bad news is that supermarket food doesn’t necessarily have all the nourishment you need. In fact, fruit and veg have shown to be lacking in essential nutrients. Read the full story here.
You can counteract this by topping up with vitamin and mineral supplements. Look out for full-circle vitamin solutions that are water-soluble, as this makes it easier to digest and absorb.
You should also make sure the vitamin pack can be tailored to your individual needs for body and mind. We’re all different after all.
Follow these 5 steps and you’ll be on your way to glowing, healthy skin that will make you feel confident, inside and out.
